Week in Review:

Friday, October 16, 2009 @ Regina Pats

The Blazers and Pats traded goals all night long as the visiting team won 5-4 in overtime. Tyler Shattock kicked off the scoring, while the Pats replied with two goals of their own to take a 2-1 lead after the first period. After a 3-3 tie into the final frame, the Pats got a goal from Colten Teubert with just over 7 minutes remaining to take a 4-3 lead. Jake Trask would than reply on a powerplay late in the game to send the game into overtime. It was all Blazers in overtime, as Zak Stebner’s shot found its way past Dawson Guhle for the victory. The Blazers were 1-for-2 on the powerplay and 3-for-3 on the penalty kill. Jon Groenheyde was solid in net as he stopped 42 of 46 pucks he faced.

Saturday, October 17, 2009 @ Brandon Wheatkings

After a 5-4 win in Regina, the hockey team lacked any type of jump as they fell 8-3 to the Memorial Cup hosts. Brandon’s Brayden Schenn scored first, to take a 1-0 lead after the first period. The Blazers’ Bronson Maschmeyer tied it early in the second period on a powerplay, but it was all Wheaties after that, as they scored 4 goals in the second, and added 3 more in the third to secure the win. Brandon native Shayne Wiebe and Brendan Ranford each scored for the Blazers in a losing cause. Goaltender Justin Leclerc suffered the loss in net, stopping 35 of 43 shots he faced. The Blazers were 2-for-5 on the powerplay and 4-for-6 on the penalty kill. The hockey club’s record drops to 8-3-2.

Blazers on the Road

The hockey club has started their road trip with a 1-1 record. Go to blazerhockey.com or read the Kamloops Daily News as Blazers Captain Tyler Shattock is doing a daily diary from the road!

Stampohar’s Debut

The Kamloops Blazers acquired 19 year old forward John Stampohar from the Medicine Hat Tigers last week. In his debut Friday in Regina, Stampohar picked up 2 assists to help the hockey team defeat the Regina Pats 5-4.

RCMP Recognizes Blazers

Kamloops Blazers General Manager Craig Bonner accepted an award from the RCMP last week for the team’s participation in the EDGE Program. The EDGE program is where the hockey club sends players to Vancouver’s Downtown East side with local RCMP officers. Following their tour, the players visit local schools in Kamloops to present what they have learned.
