15-year-old goaltender Dylan Garand earned his first career win in the WHL as he made 31 saves to help the Blazers to a 3-2 win over the Red Deer Rebels on Friday night.
The Rebels outshot the Blazers 8-0 early on, but the Blazers scored the game’s first goal. Jermaine Loewen went in on a partial break and scored his seventh of the season for a 1-0 Blazers lead.
Jared Dmytriw tied the game early in the second period. He beat Garand at an odd angle to make it a 1-1 game.
Joe Gatenby gave the Blazers the lead on a 5-on-3 power play midway through the period. He wired a shot off the post and in to make it 2-1 Blazers.
The Blazers added insurance in the third period as Quinn Benjafield set up Nick Chyzowski for his fourth of the season and a 3-1 lead.
The Rebels scored a late goal with 16 seconds left to make it a 3-2 final for the Blazers.
The Blazers were 1-for-6 on the power play, while the Rebels finished 0-for-5. The Rebels outshot the Blazers 33-32.
The Blazers will hit the road for a game in Seattle on Saturday night.
