Blazers’ Zary added to Canada’s National Junior Team Sport Chek Selection Camp roster

Calgary, Alta. – The Western Hockey League is proud to announce that Kamloops Blazers forward Connor Zary has been added to Canada’s National Junior Team Sport Chek Selection Camp roster for the 2020 IIHF World Junior Championship.

An ‘A’-rated prospect by NHL Central Scouting for the 2020 NHL Draft, Zary is tied for fourth in WHL scoring this season with 41 points (19G-22A) through 28 games. He’s tied for third in the league in goals and tied for 12th in assists.

The 6-foot-0, 180-pound Zary is a product of Saskatoon, Sask. Zary was chosen by the Blazers in the second round, 37th overall, of the 2016 WHL Bantam Draft. To date, Zary has appeared in 160 WHL regular season games, posting 139 points (55G-84A), including 19 power-play goals, six short-handed goals, and 10 game-winning goals.

He also has four points (3G-1A) in four WHL playoff games, including one power-play goal, one short-handed goal, and one game-winning goal. Last month, Zary represented the WHL at the 2019 CIBC Canada Russia Series, posting one assist in two games.

Zary has represented Canada on the international stage before, playing at the 2019 IIHF Under-18 World Championship. At the tournament, he recorded seven points (4G-3A) in seven games.

Joining Zary at the National Junior Team Sport Chek Selection Camp are goaltender Joel Hofer (Winnipeg, Man. / Portland Winterhawks), defencemen Calen Addison (Brandon, Man. / Lethbridge Hurricanes), Bowen Byram (Cranbrook, B.C. / Vancouver Giants), Braden Schneider (Prince Albert, Sask. / Brandon Wheat Kings), and Ty Smith (Lloydminster, Alta. / Spokane Chiefs) along with forwards Dylan Cozens (Whitehorse, Yukon / Lethbridge Hurricanes), Nolan Foote (Kelowna, B.C. / Kelowna Rockets), and Peyton Krebs (Okotoks, Alta. / Winnipeg ICE).

In total, Hockey Canada has named four goaltenders, 10 defencemen, and 17 forwards to the 31-man roster.

Canada’s National Junior Team Sport Chek Selection Camp will be held at the Sixteen Mile Sports Complex in Oakville, Ont. and will feature a pair of games against a team of U SPORTS all-stars on Dec. 11-12. Tickets for selection camp are available at HockeyCanada.ca/Tickets, starting at $15 plus fees.

The 2020 IIHF World Junior Championship begins on Boxing Day when Canada takes on the United States at 1 p.m. ET/10 a.m. PT. TSN and RDS, Hockey Canada’s official broadcast partners, will air all 31 games at the 2020 IIHF World Junior Championship, providing wall-to-wall game coverage and analysis throughout the tournament.

Canada has won 31 medals at the IIHF World Junior Championship since 1977, including 17 gold, nine silver and five bronze. Team Canada last took home gold in Buffalo in 2018.
